A major case of killing of about 500 stray dogs by injecting them with poison has come to light in Kamareddy and Hanamkonda districts of Telangana in the last one week. Due to this there is a lot of anger among the people and controversy has spread. This work has been done to fulfill some promises made during the Gram Panchayat elections.

 

According to news agency PTI, some sarpanches and elected people had promised the villagers that they would end the problem of stray dogs and monkeys. Now after winning the elections, he is ‘fulfilling’ these promises.

Police registered a case

In Kamareddy district, police have registered a case against 6 people, including 5 sarpanches. Similarly, in Hanamkonda district also, a case has been registered against 9 people (including two women sarpanches and their husbands) for killing 300 dogs. These killings of dogs were allegedly carried out in Shyamapet and Arepalli villages.

 

After killing the dogs, they were buried in the soil outside the village. Later the veterinary team dug him up and his postmortem was done. Now investigation is going on in the forensic lab to find out what kind of poison caused the death.

Activist complained

Animal welfare activist Adulapuram Gautam lodged a complaint at Machreddy police station on Monday. He said that around 200 dogs were killed in 5 villages of Palvancha mandal in the last 2-3 days.

 

The Sarpanches hired a person and got him injected with poison. Gautam himself went to Bhavanipet village and saw piles of dead dogs there. Police have registered a case under the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Supreme Court order

Meanwhile, in view of the problem of stray dogs, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it can order states to pay huge compensation in dog bite cases. Also, those who feed dogs can also be held responsible. The court expressed deep displeasure over non-implementation of rules regarding stray animals in the last 5 years.
