Accident in Thailand – 22 passengers killed, more than 30 injured after crane falls on moving train
New Delhi, 14 January. A horrific accident occurred in Thailand on Wednesday morning, when a large construction crane working on a high-speed rail project fell on a speeding passenger train in the Sikhio district. The collision derailed the train’s carriages and caught fire on the Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani service. According to media reports, about 22 people have died in the accident and more than 30 people are said to be injured. The condition of many of them is serious. The train that was involved in the accident was going to Ubon Ratchathani province of Thailand.

Transport Minister Piphat Rachkitprakan said 195 people were on board the train. He also said he had ordered an investigation into the accident, the Associated Press reports. Police said that the fire in the coaches has been extinguished and rescue operations are underway.
The crash happened about 9:05 a.m. Wednesday in Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 230 kilometers (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok, officials said. A crane being used in the construction of a railway bridge fell on a speeding passenger train and the driver did not get a chance to apply the brakes.
After the collision, debris from the crane fell on the train, causing several coaches to derail. The coaches caught fire as soon as they derailed. According to officials, most of the passengers in the coach were school students. Many passengers were trapped in the coaches, who are being taken out with the help of cutting and spreading equipment.
