The report shows that at present around 10 crore people in India are suffering from diabetes. It is feared that this number may almost double by 2030. What is even more worrying is that a large population does not know that they are in the grip of pre-diabetes or diabetes.

A new study has said that diabetes can become the second biggest cause of economic burden for India in the next 30 years i.e. by 2050. This study has been done jointly by the International Institute for Applied System Analysis and Vienna University of Economics. In this, data from 204 countries was analyzed. According to the report, due to diabetes, there will be an additional burden of about 10 trillion dollars on the global economy. America, India and China are at the top in this list.

How did diabetes cases increase in India?

Till a few decades ago, infectious diseases were much discussed in India. But after 2000, with urbanization and changing lifestyle, the graph of non-communicable diseases increased rapidly. According to government data, there were about 3.2 crore patients in the year 2000, the number increased in 2007, in 2017 more than 7.3 crore cases of diabetes were reported and about 10 crore patients have become victims of it.

Main reasons for increasing diabetes

The earlier diet was based on fiber and pure grains. Now the use of polished rice, refined flour and oil has increased.

Increasing trend of processed food

Pizza, burgers, soft drinks, biscuits and sweet drinks have become a part of everyday life. These are major causes of diabetes.

Today’s working life is mostly spent sitting in a chair. Due to this the body is not able to remain active.

stress and depression

Work pressure and increasing mental stress are increasing. This also increases the risk of diabetes.

  • Eat pure grains, pulses, green vegetables and fruits
  • Stay away from processed and packaged foods
  • Walk or exercise for at least 30 minutes every day
  • Drink enough water and get enough sleep
