Congress angry over Manikarnika Ghat dispute, demonstrated in Indore

Indore. Protests have been seen in Indore against the demolition of Manikarnika Ghat, built 254 years ago by Goddess Ahilya in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Indore City Congress has protested against this by staging a dharna under the statue of Goddess Ahilya in Rajwada. Congress leaders allege that the historical heritage created by Goddess Ahilya has been damaged. The temples located there have been demolished and the statue of Goddess Ahilya has also been damaged.

Sajjan Verma targeted BJP

Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma, while targeting BJP, said that BJP talks about religion, but it is all hypocrisy. There is a BJP government in UP and they have shown their reality by breaking the historical legacy. Congress has demanded that a new construction should be done there soon, everyone is saddened by this incident.

Redevelopment work at a cost of Rs 18 crore

Kolkata’s Rupa Foundation is doing the redevelopment of Manikarnika Ghat with CSR funds. Its construction will cost approximately Rs 18 crore. PM Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for Manikarnika redevelopment of the cremation ground on 7 July 2023. Sandstone from Chunar and pink stones from Jaipur will be used in its construction.

Why the controversy over redevelopment work?

Actually, Manikarnika Ghat situated on the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi is being redeveloped. Demolition was carried out at many places for this construction work. This ghat was built by Goddess Ahilya Bai Holkar, the ruler of Indore. This is why people are protesting.
