Indian stock market closed: The Indian stock market will be closed on January 15 due to the municipal elections in Maharashtra. This information was given in a circular issued by the National Stock Exchange on Monday. In a partial modification to the earlier exchange circular, the exchange has announced a trading holiday in the capital market segment on Thursday, January 15, 2026 due to the municipal elections in Maharashtra.
The stock market will remain open on January 15, only the settlement department will remain closed due to municipal elections. As per the latest notification, trading in equity, derivatives, security lending and borrowing (SSB), currency derivatives and interest derivatives segments will also remain closed.

Additionally, trading in the commodity derivatives segment will remain closed in the morning session, however, trading will continue as usual in the evening session. Due to the closure of the exchange, investors will not be able to trade in any segment including equities and derivatives. The market will then resume on Friday, January 16, with normal trading on that day. The next stock market holiday will be on Monday, January 26.
The Maharashtra government has on January 15 declared a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act to hold elections to local bodies in 29 municipal corporations, which include Mumbai city and Mumbai suburban districts governed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The Indian stock market experienced volatile trading on Monday. The day started in the red, but eventually closed in the green due to the US ambassador’s statement. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark index, Sensex, opened the trading day at 83,435.31 points, touching a low of 82,861.07 and a high of 83,962.33. It finally closed up 301.93 points, or 0.36 percent, at 83,878.17.
Nifty and Sensex closed in the green. The main index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also witnessed fluctuations throughout the day. The Nifty opened at 25,669.05 and touched a low of 25,473.40 and a high of 25,813.15. It finally closed up 106.95 points, or 0.42 percent, at 25,790.25.
