In the winter session of Parliament, the Central Government brought the VB–G RAM-G Bill to replace the MNREGA scheme brought during the time of the Congress government. Now this bill has been passed in the Parliament but Congress is still holding protest rallies in different parts of Punjab. Congress is increasing its activism in Punjab through MNREGA. Congress rallies are also getting huge support from the public. Congressmen are happy to see the crowd coming to the rallies and Congress leaders are also presenting the agenda of 2027 elections from the stage.

Congress is also demonstrating its strength through ‘Save MNREGA’ rallies. In rallies, all the Congress leaders are seen sitting together on the stage and Congress is also giving the message of unity. Congress leaders are saying in the rally that the Congress party will get the new law withdrawn at any cost. Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, Congress leaders are saying that under the new law, BJP has kept 40 percent of the funds in the states’ share. At the same time, if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of Punjab is not able to fulfill the promise made to women, then how will it give 40 percent share under this law.

Congress united on CM face?

Congress party was out of power in Punjab in 2022. One of the main reasons for losing the elections badly was considered to be factionalism within the Congress. Many Congress leaders were projecting themselves as CM face in the 2022 elections. After the election defeat, Congressmen are now saying that the mistakes made by Congress in the 2022 assembly elections will not be repeated again. State in-charge Bhupesh Baghel made it clear that Congress will contest the 2027 assembly elections under collective leadership without announcing the CM face.

For the first time after a long time, all the big leaders of Congress are seen speaking in one voice on one platform. Punjab Congress chief Raja Wadig told Bhupesh Baghel from the stage that his aim is not to become the Chief Minister but to form the Congress government in Punjab. He said from the stage, ‘I am not a CM candidate. I don’t want to become the Chief Minister. Jhadu and BJP people are making propaganda that there are five CM candidates in Congress, there is nothing like that.

Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also joined Raja Vading’s voice. He said, ‘Congress is united. Bhupesh Baghel ji, none of us wants Chief Ministry. We want Congress rule in Punjab, no matter who becomes the CM.

Political experts believe that at present the strongest party in Punjab is Congress. However, due to factionalism within the party, the party lost badly in the 2022 elections but after these elections the party has tried to correct its mistakes. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa, Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, State President Raja Vading and Ranjit Singh, Rana Gurjeet, apart from current and former Congress MLAs and MPs, are seen on one stage. Seeing this unity of Congress leaders, there is enthusiasm among the grassroots workers of Congress also.

Crowd gathered in 9 rallies

Punjab Congress is trying to create a mass movement against MNREGA. Last week, Congress held 9 rallies in different parts of Punjab and gave the message that the struggle will become more fierce in the coming days. The party organized its 9th MNREGA Bachao Rally in Guruharsahai, Punjab. In these 9 rallies, every effort was made to show unity among the leaders of Punjab Congress. Former CM Charanjit Singh Channi and senior leader Rana Gurjit Singh, who were missing in eight rallies, also participated in this 9th rally.

‘Will not make the mistake of 2022’

Punjab Congress held a press conference after the successful organization of these 9 rallies. In this, Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel said that due to the mistakes made in the 2022 assembly elections, Congress had to face defeat. Baghel indicated that in the upcoming elections, the party will not contest any one person as the chief ministerial face, but the elections will be fought with collective leadership. Along with this, Baghel also made it clear that at present there is no plan for any change in the state leadership.

Target on AAP-BJP

Punjab Congress is targeting many targets through MNREGA Bachao Rally. On one hand, Congress leaders are accusing BJP of being anti-Punjab, while on the other hand, they are accusing Aam Aadmi Party of betraying the people of Punjab. At a rally, Congress chief Raja Vading said, ‘AAP is no different from BJP and AAP had just called the assembly session for show and passed a resolution against ending MNREGA. I want to ask, what was achieved by this at the grassroots level? He said that what else can be expected from a government which has increased the debt burden of the state to Rs 4.5 lakh crore. The AAP government is just making lip service. Congress leaders cornered the Aam Aadmi Party government on the issue of control of Punjab government in Delhi, law and order and employment.

At the same time, BJP was also the target of Congress leaders. Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa said that the BJP government at the Center is adopting a hostile attitude towards Punjab. He said that rural development fund worth Rs 9000 crore has been stopped and now with the end of MNREGA the rural poor will be further affected. Punjab Congress will now gherao BJP offices and leaders after the MNREGA Bachao rallies. Along with this, Congress Party is also preparing for big demonstrations on the streets.
