New Delhi: While wishing the countrymen on the occasion of Pongal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that this festival inspires us to make conservation of nature a part of our lifestyle. Mr Modi attended Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan here on Wednesday.

On this occasion, he said, “The festival of Pongal inspires us that gratitude towards the earth should not be limited to words only, we should make it a part of our lifestyle.”

He said that when this earth gives us so much, it is our responsibility to cherish it. Keeping the soil healthy, saving water and using resources in a balanced manner is most important for the next generation. Our campaigns like Mission Life, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, Amrit Sarovar, carry forward this spirit. We are continuously working to make farming more sustainable and eco-friendly.

The Prime Minister said that Pongal has become a global festival. Tamil community across the world and people who love Tamil culture celebrate it with enthusiasm. He said that Pongal is like a pleasant experience in Tamil life, it has a feeling of gratitude towards the hard work of the food provider, the earth and the sun, and this festival also shows us the way to create a balance between nature, family and society.

He said, “At this time, there is enthusiasm for Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu and other festivals in different parts of the country. I wish all the Tamil brothers and sisters living in India and around the world a very happy Pongal and all the festivals.” Referring to his participation in many programs related to Tamil culture last year, he said that Tamil culture is the common heritage of the whole of India, not only this, it is the common heritage of the entire humanity. Festivals like Pongal further strengthen the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’.

PM Modi said that in almost all civilizations of the world some festival related to crops is celebrated. In Tamil culture, farmer is considered the basis of life. Tirukkural has written extensively on agriculture and farmers. Our farmers are strong partners in nation building, their efforts are greatly strengthening the Self-reliant India campaign. The Central Government is also committed to empowering the farmers and is continuously working.

PM Modi said that Tamil culture is one of the oldest living civilizations in the world. Tamil culture connects centuries, it learns from history and shows the way forward to the present. With this inspiration, today’s India is moving forward towards new possibilities by taking strength from its roots. Today, on this auspicious occasion of Pongal, we are feeling the faith that is taking India forward. An India that is connected to its culture, respects its land and is full of confidence about the future.
