The meeting of the Expert Working Group (EWG) on Counter Terrorism is going to be held under the 16th ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). This meeting and the final planning conference for the table top exercise will be held in New Delhi from 14 to 16 January. This meeting will be co-chaired by India and Malaysia.
The Defense Ministry says that 11 ASEAN member countries will participate in this important meeting. The meeting will be attended by delegations from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Timor Leste. Along with this, 7 dialogue partner countries will also become a part of it.
Under this, representatives of Australia, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Japan, China, America and Russia and ASEAN Secretariat will also participate in this meeting. This will be the third meeting under the cycle running between 2024 and 2027. Indeed, ADMM-Plus is an important platform for practical cooperation between the defense establishments of partner countries.
Currently the platform focuses on seven key areas. These include maritime security, counter-terrorism operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, peacekeeping operations, military medical, humanitarian mine action and cyber security.
Expert working groups have been formed to facilitate cooperation in these areas. The main objective of this meeting, which is going to be held from Wednesday, is to review the progress made after the previous meeting. Along with this, its objective is also to discuss the ongoing and proposed activities under the three-year action plan.
This step is being taken to further strengthen India’s multilateral cooperation capacity in the field of counter-terrorism under the ADMM-Plus framework.
The Defense Ministry says a final planning conference for the table top exercise will be held on January 14. Malaysia will host the table top exercise in 2026, while India will host the field training exercise in 2027 during the upcoming Expert Working Group meeting.
The role of the Co-Chairs includes setting the objectives, policy guidelines and guidance for the Expert Working Group at the beginning of the three-year cycle. At the same time, their role also includes organizing at least two expert working group meetings every year and testing the progress made in practical cooperation by organizing exercises etc. in the third year.
