Huge crowd of devotees gathered at Gangasagar fair on Makar Sankranti, lakhs of people took a dip of faith.
Gangasagar Fair: On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, lakhs of devotees took a holy dip at the confluence of Hooghly River and Bay of Bengal in Sagar Island, West Bengal on Wednesday morning. Devotees braved the cold and took a dip at sunrise and offered prayers at Kapil Muni Ashram on the island in South 24 Parganas district, where the prestigious Gangasagar fair is going on. The auspicious time of ‘Shahi Snan’ will start at 1.19 pm and will continue for 24 hours.

Makar Sankranti celebrations began with much fanfare in West Bengal as devotees gathered at Sagar Island to take a holy dip and offer prayers. A huge crowd of Naga Sadhus and ascetics, including both men and women, was seen in Gangasagar this Makar Sankranti. Well-known personalities like Lighting Baba and Trishul Baba were also present. Lakhs of people from different parts of the state and country have come to take a holy dip in the Ganga. There is a crowd of devotees in Kapil Muni temple also. The administration is also ready to handle lakhs of devotees.
It is believed that today the number of devotees will exceed crores. The entire temple complex including the beach is being strictly monitored. However the date of holy dip starts at 1.19 pm. Overall, the sea has become a meeting place on Sankranti with the gathering of lakhs of people. Meanwhile, according to state administration sources, 15 lakh people have gathered in Gangasagar in one day. The number of pilgrims has crossed 60 lakh. The state government and administration have taken several public service initiatives for the convenience of the pilgrims. The administration is prepared to avoid any untoward incident. Strict monitoring of miking and police is going on.
