Donald Trump’s insistence on Greenland: What is the real reason behind this dispute?
US President Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland is continuously increasing. On one hand, he is giving open threats to Iran, on the other hand, his recent statement regarding acquiring Greenland has created a new stir in global politics.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump reiterated that he will not accept anything less than American control over Greenland. After this statement of Trump, resentment is clearly visible in the European countries. After Denmark, now France has also come out in open protest and has given a strong warning regarding the sovereignty of Greenland.
Nothing less than Greenland is acceptable: Trump
Recently, a bill related to making Greenland the 51st state of America was introduced in the US Congress. The very next day, Trump gave a statement saying that Greenland is very important for America in terms of national security.
Trump claims that if the US does not take control of Greenland, then Russia or China can capture this strategic island. He also appealed to NATO to take initiative in this direction and said that with the inclusion of Greenland, NATO will become stronger. Trump has also indicated earlier that he will not shy away from the use of force if necessary.
France’s warning: playing with sovereignty is dangerous
After Trump’s statements, many European countries have become vocal, among which France is at the forefront. After the cabinet meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a strict tone that playing with the sovereignty of any European and allied country can have serious consequences.
Expressing solidarity with Greenland, Macron said that Europe is keeping a close eye on this entire incident.
Clouds of crisis over trade deal too
Trump’s aggressive policy regarding the Greenland issue may also affect the trade relations between the EU and America. Some members of the European Parliament are demanding a ban on the proposed trade deal with America.
According to reports, if America does not change its stance regarding Greenland, then consideration may be given to stopping the law related to reducing import duty on American goods. However, in response to this, Trump may threaten to impose more tariffs on European products.
Why is America after Greenland?
Donald Trump has said many times that Greenland is very important for America’s national security. He claims that the presence of Russian and Chinese ships is continuously increasing in this area.
The US believes that Greenland can act as a strategic buffer against potential threats from Russia and China.
Greenland is a treasure trove of rare minerals.
Greenland is also considered very important in terms of natural resources. According to reports, there are large reserves of many rare minerals like **uranium, lithium, cobalt and graphite.
These minerals are essential for future cutting-edge technologies like defense technology, semiconductors and electric vehicles (EV). For this reason, America is considering control over Greenland important from both strategic and economic point of view.
