NASA conducted medical exit of astronauts for the first time, people from 3 countries are returning
NASA First Medical Evacuation: An astronaut in need of medical attention left the International Space Station along with three companions on Wednesday as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) first medical exit mission. These four astronauts from America, Russia and Japan are planning to land early Thursday in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego with the help of SpaceX. This decision ended his mission more than a month ago. Before the return trip, NASA astronaut Jenna Cardman said that the timing of our departure is unexpected. But, I was not surprised that this team was united like a family and helping each other. Taking care of each other.
Last week, officials declined to reveal the identity of the astronaut who needed treatment. Information about his health concerns was also not given. The space station’s outgoing commander, Mike Finke, said via social media earlier this week that the ill astronauts were stable, safe and well cared for. He also said that this was a deliberate decision, so that proper treatment evaluation can be done on the ground, where complete diagnostic facilities are available.
Passengers had to stay till the end of February
Cardman, Finke, Japan’s Kimiya Yui and Russia’s Oleg Platonov, who went in August 2025, were to remain on the space station till the end of this February. But, on January 7, NASA suddenly canceled the next day’s spacewalk by Cardman and Finke. Later the team’s premature withdrawal was announced. Officials said the health problem was not related to spacewalk preparations or other station operations, but declined to provide further details, citing medical confidentiality. He stressed that this was not an emergency.
Entry and landing procedures will remain the same
NASA said the entry and landing procedures will remain the same at the end of the flight. As usual, there will be a team of medical experts on the recovery ship in the Pacific Ocean. It was another midnight team return for SpaceX, less than 11 hours after separation from the space station. NASA said it was not known how quickly the four would be transported from California to Houston, where the Johnson Space Center and astronaut base is located.

The mission started with the launch of the Soyuz rocket
One and a half months into the eight-month mission, which began with the launch of a Soyuz rocket from Kazakhstan, one American and two Russian astronauts are still aboard the orbiting lab. NASA and SpaceX are working to advance the launch of the new 4-member team from Florida, which is currently targeted for mid-February.
