Urjit Patel, who left RBI, becomes executive director of IMF

The Central Government has entrusted important responsibility to former Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Urjit Patel. The government has appointed Urjit Patel as Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His appointment has been made for three years.

Urjit Patel was the 24th Governor of RBI. He was appointed Governor of RBI in 2016. In 2018, he resigned from the post of RBI Governor due to personal reasons. Urjit Patel was the first Governor who resigned from RBI due to personal reasons.

Will be the executive director of IMF for 3 years

Almost 7 years after leaving RBI, the Central Government has made him Executive Director in IMF. Regarding this, the Ministry of Personal and Public Grievances and Pension has issued the notification of his appointment.

 

It was told in the notification that the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of former RBI Governor and economist Dr. Urjit Patel as the Executive Director of the IMF. His appointment will last for three years after assuming charge or until further orders.

Who is Urjit Patel?

Born in a Gujarati family in Kenya, Urjit Patel became an Indian citizen in 2013. After schooling in Kenya, he graduated from the London School of Economics in 1984. He then obtained an M.Phil degree from Oxford University and later a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1990. Got the degree.

Ph.D. After completing his studies, Urjit Patel joined the IMF. Here he worked at America, India, Bahamas and Myanmar desks. After this he joined RBI. From 1998 to 2001, he also worked as a consultant in the Finance Ministry.

On 11 January 2013, he was appointed Deputy Governor of RBI. After the completion of Raghuram Rajan’s tenure, he was appointed Governor of RBI on 4 September 2016. Demonetization was done during the tenure of Urjit Patel. On December 10, 2018, he resigned from the post of RBI Governor. Urjit Patel is the first RBI Governor whose tenure was the shortest.
