Bangladesh Cricket Board came to its knees, why did the players create ruckus?

After the uproar by Bangladeshi players, finally Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had to take action against Nazmul Islam. BCB on Thursday (January 15) removed the bigoted Nazmul Islam from the post of chairman of the finance committee of the board. Nazmul had recently given statements regarding Bangladeshi players, after which the players created a ruckus and then the board had to come to its knees.

Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) had opened a front against Nazmul. CWAB had said that if he does not resign from his post by 1 pm on Thursday then the players will boycott all types of cricket. When Nazmul’s resignation did not come, the players also remained firm on their stand and the toss could not even take place in two matches of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Besides, 4 matches of Dhaka Cricket League were also cancelled.

Players showed solidarity

When Dhaka Cricket League matches were not held due to the boycott, BCB also issued a show cause notice to Nazmul. But on the appeal of CWAB, the players participating in BPL remained united in their demand for immediate removal of Nazmul from the post. Under pressure from players and the public, BCB finally had to take action.

Nazmul was removed from the post of Chairman of the Finance Committee. However, it is not yet clear whether he will remain the board director or not. BCB said in its statement, ‘The Bangladesh Cricket Board would like to inform that after looking at the recent developments and in the best interest of the Board, the BCB President has decided to remove Nazmul Islam from the post of Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect.’

The statement further said, ‘The BCB President will hold the post of acting Chairman of the Finance Committee until further orders. BCB reiterates that the welfare of the cricketers is its biggest priority. The Board is fully committed to maintaining the honor and dignity of all players under its jurisdiction.

What was the root of the chaos?

After Mustafizur Rahman was expelled from IPL, BCB had refused to send Bangladesh team to India for the T20 World Cup. He said that he demanded from ICC, the governing body of world cricket, that Bangladesh’s matches should be shifted to Sri Lanka. There is less than a month left for the T20 World Cup. In such a situation, it is difficult to organize Bangladesh matches in Sri Lanka. Talks are going on between BCB and ICC to find a solution.

There is a possibility that Bangladesh may boycott the T20 World Cup. If this happens, BCB will have to compensate its players. When asked questions related to this, Nazmul had said that no compensation will be given to the players, because they have not justified the support received till now and they have not been able to win even a single ICC tournament. After his statement, there was an uproar in the Bangladesh cricket world. Everyone unanimously criticized Nazmul’s statement. Senior all-rounder Mehdi Hasan Miraj said on this matter, ‘The cricket board is our guardian but it is very disappointing for one of them to say such a thing.’

Tamim was called ‘India’s agent’

This is the same Nazmul, who a few days ago had called former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal an ‘agent of India’. Tamim had talked about handling the standoff with India with restraint and warned that the impact of the decisions taken today would be visible for 10 years. Nazmul had reacted to this statement of Tamim, after which there was a huge uproar at that time also.

CWAB President Mohammad Mithun said before the action was taken against Nazmul, ‘We have been talking to the BCB on many issues but no solution has been found. Now we are disappointed. Cricketers are playing for honour. We asked him (Nazmul) to apologize but he became more adamant. He cannot make such comments.
