Pune Grand Tour Road Race Cycling from January 19, former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be the ambassador.
171 riders from 29 teams from 35 countries will participate.
MS Dhoni News: Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Thursday appointed as the ambassador of Bajaj Pune Grand Tour. It is the country’s first UCI 2.2 category multi-stage road race cycling event. This competition will be held from 19 to 23 January, in which 171 riders from 29 teams from 35 countries will participate. The five-day continental road cycling race for men will cover 437 kilometers through the southern plateau and Sahyadri range, including sharp turns and challenging climbs.
Dhoni has been appointed the ambassador of this event. He said that this race will open new opportunities for cycling in the country and wished the Indian team all the best. Dhoni said, ‘With the organization of Pune Grand Tour, a new chapter of cycling as a professional sport is starting in India. I wish the organizers every success for this initiative, especially the Indian national team, which will get a great opportunity to prove itself in front of the home crowd.
The International Challenge will be led by Spain’s Pro Team Burgos Barpelat, which is ranked 25th in the UCI (International Cycling Union) rankings. After this, China’s Li Ning Star Team is at 36th place and Malaysia’s Terengganu Cycling Team is at 37th place.
The host challenge will be led by renowned rider Naveen John. India will also field a ‘Development Team’, giving a total of 12 Indian riders the opportunity to showcase their talent in home conditions, with four other riders also being part of the squad. This race is being organized by the Pune District Administration under the aegis of Cycling Federation of India.
