Chaibasa The tusk elephant, which has become synonymous with terror on the border of Jharkhand and Odisha, has once again been seen in Mazgaon block of West Singhbhum. The presence of elephants in Bandasai and Tilokuti areas of Haldia in Mazgaon has given sleepless nights to the villagers. The Forest Department team is engaged on a war footing to drive away this elephant which has killed 20 people in the last 15 days.

Panic among villagers
There was chaos due to the elephant’s sudden arrival in Mazgaon area. As soon as the villagers saw the elephant, they immediately informed the forest department. The forest personnel who reached the spot have started efforts to drive the elephant away from the populated area towards the forest by lighting torches and using firecrackers.
Elephant’s location found
It is noteworthy that this tusk elephant was last seen in Benisagar of Khadpos Panchayat. After which he went out of track. For some time there were reports of it entering the Odisha border, but the location was not clear. Now again the elephant activity in Mazgaon area has increased the concern of the forest department. At present this elephant is camping on the Jharkhand-Odisha border.

Teams of four states are running a joint campaign
In view of the increasing threat of elephants, currently teams of Jharkhand and Odisha Forest Departments are running a joint operation. Teams of wildlife experts from Odisha, Jharkhand as well as Assam and Gujarat are working on a plan to tranquilize the elephant. Drones and modern tracking systems are being used to know the exact location of the elephant.
