‘India-US will come together’, what Trump’s minister said amid tariff tension

The 50% tariff imposed on India by US President Donald Trump has come into effect. This has increased the tension between India and America. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Scott Besant in the Trump government said that the relations between India and America are very ‘complex’ but he also believes that eventually both will come together. He also claimed that America has the upper hand in trade talks.

Scott Besant said, ‘I think India is the world’s largest democracy and America is the world’s largest economy. Eventually we will come together.

What did Besant say about the trade deal?

Talks were going on about a trade deal between India and America. However, this deal has not been done yet. Regarding this, Scott Besant said that he hoped that India would be one of those with whom America would have its first trade deal.

He said, ‘India started talks on tariffs immediately after April 2 but no agreement has been reached yet.’ He said that he felt that a deal would be done with India by May-June.

Besant said, ‘I thought that India might be one of those with whom we would deal. They also included us during the talks and then there is also the issue of purchasing crude oil from Russia, by selling which they are earning profits. Therefore, talks are going on at many levels here.

What did you say about India’s objections to Russian oil?

Trump has imposed 50% tariff on India citing Russian oil. On this, India says that America and European countries also do business with Russia.

Recently, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said, ‘If you have any problem in buying oil or refined products from India, then do not buy it. No one is forcing you to buy it. While talking to the media, Jaishankar also made it clear that there was no discussion on Russian oil during the trade talks.

On this, Scott Besant criticized the European leaders and admitted that Europe buys refined products made from Russian oil.

What did you say about the tariff on India?

India has described the tariffs imposed by Trump as ‘unfair’. At the same time, Scott Besant has defended it.

Besant said, ‘When there is a rift in trade relations, the losing country benefits. The country which is in profit should be worried. That’s why Indians are selling us. Their tariffs are very high and we have a huge loss with them.

When he was asked about the possibility of doing business between India and BRICS countries in rupees instead of dollars, he dismissed the concern about the threat to the dollar. He said, ‘I think the rupee is near its all-time low against the US dollar.’
