From WPL to BBL… players are being retired, how much have the teams benefited?
Currently, many cases of retired outs are being seen in the ongoing T20 leagues across the world. After South Africa’s SA20 League and Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), there have been two cases of players being forcibly dismissed in the Women’s Premier League in India. On Wednesday (January 14), UP Warriors retired Harleen Deol. A day before this, Gujarat Giants had recalled Ayushi Soni against Mumbai Indians.
When Ayushi Soni was retired out, she could score only 11 runs in 14 balls. Gujarat Giants’ score was 135/5 in 16 overs. Bharti Fulmali, who came to the crease after Ayushi was recalled, along with Georgia Wareham (43 not out) took Gujarat Giants to the score of 192/5.
Fulmali scored unbeaten 36 runs in 15 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes. The strategy of retiring Ayushi worked but Gujarat Giants had to face defeat in the match. With the help of captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s explosive innings (71 not out in 43 balls), Mumbai Indians achieved the target of 193 runs by losing 3 wickets in 19.2 overs.

UP stuck after calling Harleen back
Right-handed batsman Harleen had scored 47 runs in 36 balls against Delhi Capitals. There were still three overs left to play and she looked to complete her half-century with ease. Suddenly a signal came from the dressing room to come back. Harleen could not believe it for some time. She returned to the pavilion with a heavy heart. After his departure, UP Warriors team could score only 13 runs in the last three overs and lost 4 wickets. UP Warriors set a target of 155 runs, which Delhi Capitals achieved by losing 3 wickets.
Rizwan faces disgrace in BBL
Pakistan wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan is playing for Melbourne Renegades in BBL 2025-26. Melbourne Renegades retired Rizwan against Sydney Thunder on 12 January. When Rizwan was asked to come back, he was shocked. At the request of captain Will Sutherland, he finally had to leave the crease.
Rizwan was batting slowly as usual and was able to score only 26 runs in 23 balls. After being retired, he was made fun of on social media. However, despite calling him back, Melbourne Renegades team could score only 16 runs in the last 2 overs. He scored 170 runs at the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. Due to rain, Sydney Thunder got the target of 140 runs in 15 overs, which they achieved by losing 6 wickets with 4 balls remaining.
