In the case of jewelery shop theft that took place on the night of December 28 in Tajpur police station area of Samastipur, three policemen, including the police station chief, were suspended after allegations of brutality with a worker in police custody. The suspended policemen include police station incharge Shankar Sharan Das, researcher Rajvansh Kumar and constable Rahul Kumar.

Victim Manish Kumar alleged that he and his two companions were detained on the basis of suspicion on the complaint of shop owner Zaki Ahmed. However, as no concrete evidence was found, he was released on bond. After this, on December 31, on the complaint of the shopkeeper, Manish was brutally beaten and then kept in police custody.

The victim told that from December 31 to January 4, he was continuously beaten in police custody, and there is also an allegation of pouring petrol on his private part. Considering his serious condition, he was released on bond on January 5. For treatment, Manish was first referred to Tajpur Referral Hospital and then to Sadar Hospital.

Manish’s mother Sangeet Devi said that her son was treated unfairly and the judicial process was violated. His father and wife were detained in the police station for three days and the house was searched, but no stolen jewelery was found. The victim alleged that Rs 50,000 was also demanded for dropping him at the police station.

Manish told that he used to work at Soni Fancy Jewelers located in Neem Chowk. On December 28, information was received that 28 kg silver and 60 grams gold was stolen from the shop. The next day, he was called to the shop, taken to the rooftop, beaten with an iron rod and pipe and threatened to be thrown down. Meanwhile, the police took him to the police station and kept him in custody. SP Arvind Pratap Singh, finding the matter prima facie serious, took immediate action and suspended the concerned policemen.
