Commerce Ministry says India-US trade deal very near but can’t put a deadline

India and the United States are close to finalising a long-discussed bilateral trade agreement, but no fixed timeline can be committed at this stage, the Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday.

Speaking on the status of negotiations, Rajesh AgrawalSpecial Secretary in the Commerce Ministry, stated that discussions with the US are progressing steadily. He said both sides remain actively engaged through multiple channels, including virtual-level engagements between India’s Commerce Minister and the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

According to Agrawal, the agreement is “very near,” but assigning a deadline would be premature. He emphasised that the trade deal will be concluded only when both countries are satisfied that all outstanding issues have been adequately resolved.

Officials indicated that negotiations are continuing across key trade areas, reflecting mutual interest in strengthening economic ties.
