On January 17 at 11 am, 60 year old Hindu businessman Liton Chandra Ghosh alias Kali was arrested in Kaliganj police station area of Ghazipur. beaten to death by the mob. Ghosh is the owner of Boyishakhi Sweet and Hotel. It is said that an employee of his hotel had an argument with someone over some issue, which turned into a fight.
The attackers attacked Liton Chandra Ghosh with kicks and punches.
When Liton Chandra Ghosh arrived to save the employee, the attackers attacked him with kicks and punches. Due to this he got seriously injured. He died before people could take him to the hospital. Police have detained three accused.
Young man crushed to death by car in Rajbari district
Earlier, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi Hindu youth working at a petrol pump in Rajbari district was allegedly crushed to death. According to the police, the young man was run over by a customer when he was trying to run away without paying for the petrol. The deceased has been identified as Ripon Saha, who worked at Karim Filling Station located at Golanda Mor in Rajbari district. This incident is being reported around 4:30 am on Friday.
Driver runs away after crushing young man with SUV
According to police and eyewitnesses, a black SUV came to the petrol pump and filled up with fuel worth about 5,000 taka (about 3,700 Indian rupees). After this the driver tried to move the vehicle forward without paying. When Ripon Saha protested and stood in front of the vehicle to stop it, the SUV crushed him and fled from the spot. Ripon Saha died on the spot.
Police seized the vehicle
As soon as information about the incident was received, the police took immediate action and seized the vehicle and arrested the SUV’s owner Abul Hashem (55) and its driver Kamal Hussain (43). According to the police, Abul Hashem is a contractor by profession and a member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He has also been the former district president of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the party.
Police will register a case of murder against the accused
Speaking to news portal bdnews24.com, senior police officer Ziaur Rehman said, “We will register a case of murder in this case. When the accused were refusing to pay for the petrol, the employee stood in front of the vehicle. After this they crushed it and fled away.”
Increase in incidents of violence against Hindu community
Although this incident has happened at a time when incidents of violence against the Hindu community are increasing in Bangladesh, the police has currently refused to consider Ripon Saha’s murder as a communal incident. Officials say that only after the investigation is completed it will be clear whether there is any communal angle in this case or not.
Concern about Hindu population in Bangladesh
There is also increasing concern about the population of Hindus in Bangladesh. According to the 2022 census, the number of Hindus in the country is about 1.31 crore, which is about 8 percent of the total population. Earlier this month, Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) had claimed that as the general elections are approaching, violence against minorities is increasing. According to the organization, 51 incidents of communal violence were recorded in December 2025 alone, the purpose of which was to prevent minority voters from voting for the candidates of their choice. Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh are to be held on 12 February.
Relations between India and Bangladesh are also tense
Relations between India and Bangladesh have also remained tense for some time. The situation has worsened since the departure of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power following the student movement in August 2024. Sheikh Hasina has been living in New Delhi since then. After Hasina’s ouster from power, the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have put further pressure on the relations between the two countries. However, Dhaka claims that all the incidents were not communal.
