Congress is silencing its own people in Tamil Nadu for DMK, what is such compulsion?

Assembly elections are going to be held in Tamil Nadu. Congress, which is being marginalized in most of the states, wants to be a part of the government once again to strengthen itself with the help of the South. Congress wants to come to power in Tamil Nadu on the basis of alliance dharma, about which the top leadership has brainstormed. A section of the Congress in Tamil Nadu wants to remain in power with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). DMK is not ready to share power. Congress has appealed to the state leaders to maintain discipline.

Congress has a clear instruction to avoid unnecessary statements on matters related to election strategy. An important meeting was held on Saturday at the party’s Indira Bhawan headquarters under the chairmanship of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Leaders like former party president Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary and organization in-charge KC Venugopal, Tamil Nadu party in-charge Girish Chudankar, Congress state unit president K Selvaperunthagai, MPs P Chidambaram, Manickam Tagore, Karti Chidambaram, Jyotimani, V Vasanth and Professionals Congress chief Praveen Chakraborty attended the meeting.

Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President:-
We had an important meeting with our leaders from Tamil Nadu. We are confident that the people of Tamil Nadu will choose equality, social justice, empowerment and good governance over the bigotry, communalism, anti-union and discriminatory politics of the Sangh-Bharatiya Janata Party. Congress is determined to play an important role in fulfilling the aspirations of the people of the state.

Congress wants share in power, DMK is in no mood

The main concern of Congress in Tamil Nadu is about the terms of alliance with DMK. The party has been out of power in the state for a long time. Since 1967, there was continuous change of power between DMK and AIADMK but Congress did not get a share in power. The state unit of Congress now wants a share in power. Congress wants that if the DMK alliance wins, then cabinet ministers and other important posts should be given in the government. DMK has clearly said that there is no such tradition in Tamil Nadu. The alliance will have no stake in the government. The government will be run by DMK only.

What is the challenge before Congress?

There are a total of 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. In the year 2021, Congress had got only 25 seats, out of which Congress had won 18 seats easily. Now Congress is demanding 35–40 seats. DMK is not in favor of giving more seats to Congress. Leaders like Praveen Chakraborty, Manickam Tagore, Girish Chodankar and Sachin Pilot are demanding that when Congress has the decisive seats, then why not get a share in power also. Some leaders have also raised questions on the debt and financial condition of the DMK government, due to which a situation of tension has arisen in the party. Now Congress leaders want that if DMK government comes to power again then it should be compulsorily given a share in power.

Will Congress be a part of the alliance?

There is speculation that if the grand alliance comes to power in the 2026 elections, the Congress may demand power-sharing. Many leaders, including MPs Manickam Tagore, Girish Chodankar and S Rajeshkumar, had advocated forming a coalition government in the state. Congress also wants ministerial post for itself. Taking a jibe at the current alliance, Girish Chodankar had also said that without taking any share in power, Congress is presenting itself not as a political party but as a non-governmental organization.

Will there be a rebellion for victory?

Many leaders of Tamil Nadu Congress believe that Congress should go into alliance with Vijay. Superstar Vijay is fielding his candidates on 234 seats in Tamil Nadu. Congress leaders want the party to field its candidates on respectable seats. There can be better coordination between Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and Congress.

Local Congress leaders want this because DMK I Periyasamy has already clearly denied that MK Stalin will not share any ministerial post with any of the grand alliance allies. For their political future, Congress leaders want the top leadership of the Congress to reconsider their support and explore new possibilities.

What is the compulsion of Congress?

DMK supports Congress at the Centre. Congress is with DMK in the state. DMK does not give share in power because it has been forming the government with its majority. Congress is fighting for the survival of its organization in the state. The vote bank of Congress is also only 8 to 10 percent. By forming an alliance with DMK, Congress gets vote transfer, making it easier to win some seats.

One compulsion of Congress is that DMK is a part of INDIA block. Congress needs long term political partners to remain in a strong position at the Centre. Even after the assembly elections of 2006 and 2021, Congress also supported the party without sharing power.

It has been DMK’s tradition that alliances in the state are limited to elections only and allies are not included in the government. Now before the 2026 elections, Congress is demanding more seats and share, but DMK is clearly refusing. The DMK has remained loyal to the Congress at the Centre. Political experts say that Congress does not want to break the alliance in the state for this reason.
