Importance of green onion in winter
New Delhi: There is abundant availability of green vegetables in the winter season, of which green onion is prominent. It not only enhances the taste but is also beneficial for health.
Green onion is commonly consumed in every household, but very few people know about its health benefits. Along with improving digestion, it is a good source of Vitamin C and K.
Both its leaves and stalk are rich in nutrients. Both Ayurveda and modern nutrition science consider it an essential medicine in winters. The sensitivity of the body increases in winter, due to which the risk of infection increases. Green onions have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, which help fight infections.
According to Ayurveda, the hot nature of green onions helps in maintaining balanced body temperature. It helps in protecting from cold wind and keeps the body warm. The vitamins and minerals present in green onion make it a ‘superfood’.
Vitamin K helps maintain bone strength and controls the process of blood clotting. In case of injury, it is necessary that the blood does not thicken.
Green onions are also rich in Vitamin C, which strengthens immunity in winter. It is also essential for skin and hair. Apart from this, it contains an element called ‘Allicin’, which reduces cholesterol which is harmful for the heart.
It can be eaten as a vegetable or in salad. Some people also use it for garnishing. However, one should avoid overcooking it.
