Ujjwala Yojana Subsidy: Big Relief for Ujjwala Beneficiaries? Gas Subsidy Likely to Increase as a Measure Against Inflation
Ujjwala Yojana Subsidy: With the 2026 budget approaching, millions of housewives are eagerly awaiting the Finance Minister’s announcement, especially those benefiting from the Ujjwala Yojana. The government is expected to announce new subsidies to make cooking gas prices more affordable. Given the current fluctuations in international crude oil prices, special provisions may be made in the budget to protect the common man from inflation.
Ujjwala beneficiaries currently receive a subsidy of ₹300 for a 14.2 kg cylinder, which is directly credited to their bank accounts. To provide relief to the middle class, the 2026 budget may consider increasing this subsidy amount or revising the number of subsidized refills. The government aims to fully protect the more than 103.3 million existing beneficiaries from any sharp increase in international prices.
The government may allocate more than ₹12,000 crore for LPG subsidies in the coming financial year. Domestic LPG cylinder prices in Delhi are currently around ₹853, and there is a growing demand for further reductions through subsidies. An increase in the number of new free connections under “Ujjwala 3.0” to ensure 100% coverage may also be announced in the budget.
Amidst the US Federal Reserve policies and the global energy crisis, India is using fuel subsidies as a shield to stabilize its domestic economy. After a ₹111 increase in commercial gas cylinder prices in January 2026, the public fears that domestic cylinders may also become more expensive. Therefore, the Budget 2026 is expected to include a special price stabilization fund to keep domestic gas prices stable. The budget may announce additional cashback or rewards for beneficiaries who book refills on time and use digital payments. This will not only increase transparency in rural areas but also completely eliminate the role of intermediaries. The government may consider providing micro-loans to Ujjwala beneficiaries. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has not only provided a smoke-free life but has also revolutionized women’s health and empowerment. To promote alternative energy sources, the 2026 budget may offer additional incentives for LPG as well as biogas and solar stoves. While the pace of development should be balanced, the common man’s kitchen budget must also remain balanced.
