What is rocket-cum-missile force, why did Army Chief say it is necessary?

The rocket-cum-missile force will be a unified military command, which will enhance India’s missile capability and counter-force. In view of the changing war and the challenge of China-Pakistan, the Army Chief has called it the need of the hour.

Changing war and new military strategy

In modern times, war is no longer limited to one-on-one combat. Technology, missiles and precise attacks decide the course of any war. The war between Russia and Ukraine showed the whole world that missile attacks in the first few hours can decide victory and defeat. In such a situation, every country is engaged in strengthening its missile capability.

India’s neighboring countries China and Pakistan have already developed their own rocket and missile forces. For this reason, it has now become necessary for India to take its military strength to a new level.

What is Rocket-cum-Missile Force?

If understood in simple language, Rocket-cum-Missile Force is a special military command, under which all missile and rocket systems work under a single command. Its advantage is that decisions can be taken quickly and attacks can be carried out in a very short time.

At present the missiles in India are under the separate control of the Army, Navy and Air Force. But according to future plans, all missile systems can be integrated and operated from a single command. This will make it easier to make better coordination and accurate strategies.

Why did the Army Chief say ‘need of the hour’?

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has described the rocket-cum-missile force as the need of the hour. He says that today’s war has become technology based and the role of missiles is most important in it.
Working from a unified command instead of separate commands will reduce reaction time and enable immediate response to the enemy. In view of the challenges from China and Pakistan, this step is considered very important for India’s security.

What benefit will India get from Rocket Missile Force?

The formation of rocket-cum-missile force will increase India’s military strength manifold. The biggest feature of this force will be that the command chain will be short, due to which there will be no delay in decision making.

With the help of missiles, precise attacks can be made on enemy radar systems, airbases, military bases and command centers. Apart from this, armies of all sectors – land, water, air, cyber and space – will be able to formulate strategies together. With this, huge pressure can be created on the enemy in the initial phase itself.

What weapons might be involved?

India already has many modern and powerful missiles. The rocket-cum-missile force may include weapons like BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Pralay missile and Nirbhay cruise missile.

BrahMos is known for its high speed and precise attack, Pralay is capable of delivering lethal strikes in short duration, while Nirbhay has the ability to fire at long ranges. All these weapons can further strengthen India’s security.
