Team India’s disappointing performance continues under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir
1
New Delhi: When the Indian cricket team appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach, millions of fans expected the team to play the game with a new aggressive mindset and stronger tactics. During his playing days, Gambhir was known for his combative nature and fearless decision making. But after becoming the coach, Team India’s performance was completely contrary to expectations.
Gautam Gambhir took over the reins of the Indian team in July 2024. Under his guidance, India won the 2025 Champions Trophy and Asia Cup, which was a significant achievement in itself. These wins faced criticism for a while, but the events that followed left fans disappointed again.
Many old records broken in test cricket
Indian Test cricket suffered huge setbacks under Gambhir’s coaching. While the team had remained unbeaten on home soil for years, defeats had become a common occurrence in recent times.
- India had to face defeat in a home Test series for the first time in 12 years.
- They suffered a clean sweep in a home Test series for the first time in 25 years.
- India’s lowest score ever in test matches was made in October 2024.
- The biggest Test defeat by runs was recorded in November 2025.
- India could not make it to the final of the World Test Championship for the first time.
- All these results raise serious questions on the future of Indian Test cricket.
Performance in ODI cricket was also disappointing
Even in the ODI format, the performance of the Indian team was not satisfactory. In August 2024, India suffered an ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka, the first time since 1997. After this, India also lost the home ODI series against New Zealand.
In the third ODI played in Indore, New Zealand defeated India by 41 runs to win the series 2-1. This was New Zealand’s first ODI series win in India, which added to the pain of the defeat.
Impact on Border-Gavaskar Trophy
During Gautam Gambhir’s tenure, India also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2015. The dominance that had been built over the years on the domestic ground now seems to be gradually weakening. The opposing teams have now started challenging India in their own backyard and are also winning many times.
