Who is Karnataka’s DGP Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao?

Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao is a 1993 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. After his re-appointment in August 2025, he was made the Director General (DGP) of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement. Before this, he had also been the Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. He was promoted to DGP rank in September 2023. In his long career, he held many important positions related to urban policing and infrastructure projects, although his name has also been linked to departmental investigations and legal disputes from time to time.

The name has been in controversies before also

Ramachandra Rao was embroiled in a major controversy after the arrest of actor Ranya Rao in March 2025. Ranya Rao, who is said to be his step-daughter, was caught at Bengaluru International Airport with 14.2 kg of gold, estimated to be worth Rs 12.56 crore.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had alleged that the normal screening process at the airport was bypassed and a police constable attached to Rao’s office helped in the protocol. After this case, the government had sent Ramachandra Rao on compulsory leave. However, he distanced himself from the case and said that “the law should take its own course”. Later, the leave order was withdrawn and he was posted in the Civil Rights Enforcement Wing.

While the police claimed to have seized Rs 20 lakh, traders alleged that the real amount was Rs 2.27 crore and the police embezzled the money as part of a conspiracy.
