CBSE changed rules, counseling of students mandatory in schools, important notice issued
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made a major change in the rules related to affiliation. Notification related to this will be published on the official website on 19 January 2026. Has been released on. Now counseling of students will be mandatory in schools. Qualified counselors will also have to be appointed. It was recommended by an Affiliation Committee held on 26 November 2025. Which has been approved by the board on 24 December 2025.
Under the new rules, every secondary and senior secondary schools will have to appoint socio-emotional counselors and career counselors to provide counseling to the students. All CBSE affiliated schools will have to hire counseling and wellness teachers for 500 students. For this, one should have Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Master’s degree in Social Work or Mental Health or Counselling/Graduate or Post Graduate in any subject along with Diploma in School Counseling or Child Guidance or Counseling.
Rules for Career Counselor
Career counselors will be appointed for 500 students of class 11th and 12th in every CBSE school. They should have Bachelor or Master degree in Humanities/Science/Social Sciences/Management/Education/Technology. Apart from this, there should also be competence in career assessment/ interpretation/ higher education (India+Global)/ research skills/ student or parent career counselling/ industry.

After appointment, the counselor will have to attend a 50-hour capacity building program of CBSE. Where career counseling is not available, each school can nominate a trained teacher. Who will have to acquire the qualification prescribed by CBSE within two academic years.
What were the rules earlier?
Earlier, every secondary and senior secondary school used to appoint one person on full time basis to perform the duties of Career and Wellness Teacher. The qualification of the person appointed as Counselor and Wells Teacher should be Graduate or Post Graduate in Psychology/Post Graduate in Child Development/Graduate or Post Graduate with Diploma in Career Guidance for Counselling. Apart from this, schools which had less than 300 students in classes up to class 11th and 12th were allowed to hire counselors and wellness teachers on a part-time basis. But this will not happen now.
