‘I don’t want to take names but…’ Gavaskar scolded the fielders by mentioning Rohit-Virat, told the real reason for India’s defeat
IND vs NZ: The third and last match of the India vs New Zealand ODI series brought disappointment for India. New Zealand won the series 2-1 by winning by 41 runs in Indore. This is New Zealand’s first ODI series win on Indian soil. Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar spoke openly on this defeat and blamed fielding as the biggest culprit.
Gavaskar’s sharp taunt regarding fielding
In a conversation with Simon Doull, Sunil Gavaskar said, “I don’t want to take names but… some fielders allowed singles to be taken very easily.” He stressed that the fielding could have been more active.
Gavaskar admitted that Rohit Sharma was fast and Virat Kohli is always excellent on the field, but better performance was expected from the other fielders. According to him, the team failed to stop small runs, which made it easier for New Zealand to increase the score.
Mitchell and Phillips century
Actually, India performed well in the beginning of the match. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana dismissed Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls early, bringing New Zealand to 5/2. After this, Harshit Rana also sent Will Young to the pavilion. But after this Darryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips scored brilliant centuries.
Together they laid the foundation of a big score and the team scored 338 runs after losing 7 wickets. This score was very big for India on a pitch like Rajkot.
Virat Kohli stood alone
In reply, India’s batting once again looked weak. The team was all out for 296 runs. Virat Kohli played a brilliant inning of 124 runs, which included 10 fours and 3 sixes. His innings kept India in the match.
Harshit Rana also scored 52 runs in 43 balls, which had 4 fours and 4 sixes. Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 53 runs, but the disappointing performance of the top order batsmen led the team to defeat.
