Karnataka DGP Ramachandra Rao’s objectionable video goes viral, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah warns of action
Bengaluru. A video was widely circulated on social media on Monday in which Karnataka DGP (Civil Rights Enforcement) K. Ramachandra Rao is seen in an objectionable position with women. Rao tried to dismiss the video outright, calling it “fabricated and false”. In the matter, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that if the officer is found guilty, strict action will be taken against him.
Home Minister Mr. The DGP’s attempt to clarify his position before Parameshwara failed. The top police officer concerned is the stepfather of Harshvardhini Ranya alias Ranya Rao, who has been arrested in a sensational gold smuggling case and is currently lodged in Bengaluru Central Jail. Kannada TV news channels also broadcast blurred photographs of the women seen in the video. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “We will get it investigated.”
Reacting to the controversy involving the Director General of Police, he said, “I got to know about it in the morning. We will initiate disciplinary action against him. No one is above the law, no matter how senior the police officer is.” As soon as the video went viral, Rao reached out to meet Home Minister Parameshwara but the meeting could not take place.
Speaking to reporters outside the minister’s residence, he said, “I am also wondering how and when this happened and who did it. In these times anything can happen. I have no knowledge about it.” When journalists said it was an old video, he said, “Old meaning, from eight years ago, when I was in Belagavi.” When asked about further action, he said that he would talk to his lawyer about it.
Rao said, “I am shocked. This is all fabrication, lies. The video is completely fake. I have no knowledge about it.” When reporters asked him how it all happened, he said, “I will know only when it really happened. I don’t know anything about it.” He said that he will clarify to the Home Minister that misinformation is being spread.
Karnataka Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said that if someone has done something wrong then the government will take action against him. “As the Women and Child Development Minister, I can tell you that we will take action regardless of seniority,” she told reporters. Senior BJP MLA and former minister S. Suresh Kumar condemned “this shameful act of the police officer”, calling it “an unpardonable crime”.
