Why is Jaya Ekadashi celebrated? Know the rules of fasting
Jaya Ekadashi is highly revered in Hindu religion. It mainly falls in the Shukla Paksha of Magh month. It is believed that those who worship Lord Vishnu with full devotion on this day are liberated from the sins committed unknowingly. The main belief behind celebrating this Ekadashi is “liberation”. In particular, it is considered to get rid of ‘vampire vagina’ or negative mental states. Jaya Ekadashi will be celebrated on 29 January.
According to mythological beliefs, if someone is heading towards downfall due to his mistakes, then fasting on Jaya Ekadashi provides him spiritual peace. That is why it is not considered just a religious ritual but an opportunity to better oneself mentally and spiritually.

Why is it celebrated?
According to mythological beliefs, Gandharva and Apsara named Pushpavati lived in the court of Indra mentioned in Padma Purana. Due to some mistakes made by both of them, Indra got angry and threw them out of heaven and cursed them to become vampires.
After this both of them started living in the Himalayas. Coincidentally, on the day of Magh Shukla Ekadashi, due to extreme cold and sorrow, he ate only fruits and flowers and could not sleep the whole night. Unknowingly he completed the fast of ‘Jaya Ekadashi’. Due to the virtue of this fast, he was freed from the vampire form and returned to his divine form. Since then this fast is celebrated for freedom from suffering.
