These two films of Bihar are worthy of National Award, yet why only one got the title, know the specialty of Shool

Bihar National Award Film: Bihar is known for its history, culture and social struggles. The life here, its difficulties and folklore have often become a part of cinema. But despite its efforts, not every film gets the same recognition. In this context, we will compare two famous films – ‘Shool’ and ‘Gangajal’, both of which are based on stories from Bihar, but only one received the National Award.

Two films based on the story of Bihar

Both Shool and Gangajal show a deep story of crime and corruption.

Shool (1999) shows the reality of political corruption and crime in Bihar. The film shows how the system and political forces affect the lives of the common man.

Gangaajal (2003) is also based on crime and policing, but the story has more drama and Bollywood style flavor.

Both the films hold a mirror to the society and politics of Bihar, but their way of showing is different.

Shul received a National Award for its vision of truth and strong social message. The film showed how crime and corruption can oppress the common man, and it was presented without much glamour.

Gangaajal, although popular among the audience and successful at the box office, did not garner a National Award. The reason for this was probably that the film added more elements of thriller and entertainment to the story, while social reality was not shown that seriously.

Why truth makes a difference

National awards are often given for art and social message. Shool proved that cinema is not only a medium of entertainment but can also be a medium to bring out the truth of the society.

Gangaajal presented the stories of Bihar in an entertaining manner, but it did not get the seriousness and liveliness that was there in Shool. Both the films are related to the soil of Bihar and both showed crime, corruption and social complexities. But only Shul got respect at the national level. This teaches us that only the truth and depth of the story helps in creating a lasting identity in cinema.
