Running Mumbai Marathon next year? Here’s how Apple Watch can help you prepare
As thousands of runners wrapped up the Tata Mumbai Marathon, attention is already shifting to preparation for next year’s race. For many amateur and seasoned marathoners alike, wearables play a central role in training, recovery, and race-day execution. Apple Watch, particularly the latest Apple Watch Series 11, brings several features that can directly benefit marathon training over the long build-up to race day. Here’s a list of all the features runners can take advantage of with an Apple Watch.
Longer battery life
One of the biggest upgrades for runners is battery life. Apple Watch Series 11 now delivers up to 24 hours of usage, making it possible to track a full training day and still wear the watch overnight for sleep tracking. For outdoor runs with GPS and continuous heart-rate monitoring, the watch offers up to eight hours of battery life, enough for long runs or even marathon-distance efforts with battery to spare.
Fast charging further reduces downtime. A 15-minute charge provides up to eight hours of use, while a quick five-minute top-up before bed enables full-night sleep tracking—useful during high-mileage weeks.
Sleep score for recovery-focused training
Recovery is as critical as mileage in marathon preparation. With watchOS 26, Apple Watch introduces a Sleep Score, offering runners a clearer view of sleep quality rather than just duration. The score factors in sleep consistency, awakenings, and time spent in each sleep stage, giving runners actionable insight into whether their body is ready for harder sessions or needs recovery.
For marathoners juggling early morning runs, strength sessions, and work schedules, this data helps avoid overtraining during peak phases.
Workout updates and pacing control
Apple Watch’s updated Workout experience adds tools particularly useful for marathon training. Features such as pace alerts, Race Route, custom workouts, and heart-rate zones help runners manage effort—especially important in hot and humid conditions like Mumbai, where pace alone can be misleading.

Workout Buddy, powered by Apple Intelligence, provides spoken, real-time motivation based on heart rate, pace, and distance, offering gentle cues during long or difficult sessions. Music and podcast integration within the Workout app also simplifies long-run setups without needing constant phone interaction.
Durability and safety on the road
Marathon training often involves running on uneven roads, early mornings, or late evenings. Apple Watch Series 11’s improved Ion-X glass, with increased scratch resistance, which makes it more resilient for daily training. Cellular connectivity with 5G support allows runners to stay connected, stream music, or access emergency services without carrying a phone.
Safety features such as Fall Detection can automatically alert emergency contacts if a hard fall is detected during a run—an added layer of reassurance during solo training sessions.
Hands-free convenience during runs
The new wrist flick gesture allows runners to dismiss notifications or silence calls with one hand, reducing distractions without breaking stride—especially useful during intervals or tempo runs.
How runners are using it
Marathon runner Swati Mukund says Apple Watch plays a central role in her training approach.

“When I’m training for something like the Tata Mumbai Marathon, I rely entirely on my Apple Watch to keep training realistic. I don’t push hard every day—most runs are easy runs, supported by strength training. For speed runs, I use pace alerts and heart-rate zones, especially in Mumbai’s humidity where pace can be misleading.”
She adds that GPS split analysis, recovery metrics, and sleep tracking help her plan smarter sessions and avoid burnout.
“That balance helps me train smarter, recover better, and stay consistent all the way to race day,” she says.
