Saina told that due to knee injury she was forced to take this decision. She said, “My bones have become weak and I have arthritis. My parents and coaches should know this, and I have informed them about this. Now I cannot play anymore. This decision is very difficult for me.”

Saina said that she never felt the need to officially announce her retirement as she felt that her absence would make the situation obvious. She said, “Slowly people will understand that Saina is no longer playing. I don’t think my retirement announcement is a big issue. I felt my time was over because I couldn’t put myself under any more pressure. My knee is no longer in that condition.”

Saina said, “To compete with the top players in the world, you train eight to nine hours a day. Now my knee gets swollen in just one-two hours, and after that it becomes difficult to play. So I thought enough is enough. I can’t play anymore.”

Career affected by injuries

Saina Nehwal’s career has been greatly affected by injuries. He suffered a knee injury in the Rio Olympics 2016, but despite this he made a comeback and won a bronze medal in the World Championships in 2017. He also won a medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
