PhD student at IIT Kanpur committed suicide by jumping from a building, second incident within a month.
New Delhi. A PhD scholar student committed suicide at IIT Kanpur this afternoon. He committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of the college building. The deceased student Ramswaroop Ishram was originally from Churu, Rajasthan and lived here with his wife and daughter in the IIT campus. The incident took place in the new SBRA building on campus. After the incident, the student was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The student’s body has been sent for post-mortem and the police is trying to find out the reason for the suicide.

The police is also interrogating the wife of the deceased. Initial investigation revealed that student Ram Swaroop was suffering from depression for some time. On the other hand, due to the suicide of the student, other students in the campus are quite scared. This is the second incident of suicide by a student on campus in less than a month. Earlier on December 29, Jaisingh Meena, a student from Rajasthan, had committed suicide by hanging himself. His body was found hanging in the hostel room. Before hanging himself, he had also cut the veins of his hand.

Including today’s incident, 9 students of IIT Kanpur have committed suicide in the last 26 months. This is a very shocking and worrying matter. However, in most of the suicide cases, it has come to light that students are depressed. After all, what is the reason that students work so hard to get admission in an institute like IIT and then suddenly end their life? This matter will have to be seriously considered and concrete steps will have to be taken to get the students out of such situations.
