Saina Nehwal troubled by knee pain, announced her retirement
India’s legendary badminton player Saina Nehwal has formally announced her retirement from her sports career. Saina was suffering from severe knee pain for the last three years, due to which she was not able to play badminton for a long time. Due to pain, he has been away from sports for the last three years. Saina last participated in the Singapore Open in 2023.
Saina told in a podcast that she had injured her knee during the 2016 Rio Olympics. With time this injury became serious and the cartilage of his knees completely wore out, causing him to suffer from arthritis. Due to this illness, she was able to train only for 1–2 hours a day. If she trained more than this, her knees would start giving way and sometimes she would not even be able to stand. For this reason it became almost impossible for him to play badminton.

Saina Nehwal not only won many medals for India with her brilliant game, but also gave a new direction to the history of Indian badminton. However, due to increasing age and constant physical pain, he formally announced his retirement in January 2025. The news of his retirement has brought tears to the eyes of badminton lovers.
Took informal retirement
35-year-old Saina Nehwal revealed that she had unofficially quit playing in 2023 but has now announced it officially. During a podcast he said, ‘I had stopped playing two years ago. I felt that I played by my own rules and took leave on my own terms, so I did not feel the need for a separate announcement. If the body is no longer cooperating, there is no harm in accepting it.

Saina Nehwal’s contribution to Indian badminton can never be forgotten. She is the first female badminton player from India to win a bronze medal. Saina has not only won the bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics but has also won many medals for India in other badminton events. Saina Nehwal has won a total of 18 medals in 7 major events of the Olympics.

Saina won the bronze medal in the World Championship match held in London in 2012. Apart from this, he won two medals in the World Junior Championship, one silver and one bronze medal. In this way he won 5 medals in the World Championship. He won 3 bronze medals in the Asian Championship. He won 2 bronze medals in Uber Cup (Team Event).
Apart from this, Saina Nehwal has also received many awards. He received the Arjuna Award in 2009, Dhyanchand Award in 2010 and then in the same year he was awarded the Padma Shri. Later again in 2016, he was given the Padma Bhushan Award.
