Ajax approach Manchester United for Manuel Ugarte as transfer remains unlikely

Ajax have made an enquiry for Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, although a potential transfer is considered unlikely at this stage, according to a report by The Athletic.

The Dutch giants are understood to be exploring midfield options ahead of the new season and have shown tentative interest in the Uruguay international. However, sources suggest that Manchester United are not actively looking to part ways with Ugarte, and any move away from Old Trafford would require a significant shift in circumstances.

Ugarte, who joined United amid high expectations, remains a player the club see as part of their broader midfield plans. While his role has fluctuated due to tactical demands and competition for places, the 23-year-old’s ball-winning ability and intensity are still valued by the coaching staff. As things stand, there is no indication that United are prepared to sanction a sale, loan, or reduced-price deal.

Ajax’s enquiry is believed to be exploratory rather than a formal bid. The Eredivisie side are known for monitoring high-profile players who may be available due to squad reshuffles at elite European clubs. However, financial constraints and United’s stance make a deal difficult to materialise in the short term.
