Sports News: Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, who has a keen interest in sports, is often seen in the stadium during the IPL and Team India’s cricket matches held in Mumbai. He already owns an ISL football team and a Pro-Kabaddi League team and now he has made his presence felt in the world of cricket as well. Abhishek has bought a team in Europe’s first major cricket league, the European T20 Premier League. Owners of other teams in this league include names like former Australia World Cup-winning captain Steve Waugh, explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, former New Zealand cricketer Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills.

Abhishek Bachchan has also expressed his desire to field a veteran Indian cricketer like Virat Kohli in this league starting from August 26. However, at present this is not possible due to the rules of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), but Abhishek hopes that in future Virat Kohli can be seen playing in this European league.

Desire to bring Virat Kohli to ETPL

During the launch event of the league, Abhishek said that he wants to see a legendary Indian cricketer like Virat Kohli playing in his team. He said, the presence of Virat Kohli will make ETPL even more exciting. It is not possible at the moment, but nothing is impossible. However, currently due to BCCI rules, Indian cricketers cannot participate in foreign leagues before retiring from international cricket.

Virat Kohli has retired from Test and T20 International, but currently he is playing ODI cricket, so he will have to retire from ODI also to play in ETPL. Abhishek expressed hope that Kohli will be seen playing in this league in future and will increase the standard and global attraction of the league.

ETPL matches will be held in two countries

The first season of ETPL will start from 26 August 2026. The league matches will be held in two countries.

  • Ireland: Dublin
  • Netherlands: Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Belfast

Teams from these four places will participate in the first season. Apart from this, the names and base cities of three more teams are yet to be determined. The aim of the league is not just competition but also to expand cricket in Europe and give a platform to new talent. The ETPL is being organized with the support of Cricket Ireland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association.

Marquee players of ETPL

The ETPL has already included three Australian legends as marquee players:

  • Steve Smith – former Australian captain
  • Mitchell Marsh – current Australia T20 captain
  • Glenn Maxwell – his team owner and all-rounder

The presence of these players further increases the competitiveness and global appeal of the league. Abhishek Bachchan has a long-standing passion for cricket. He is often seen in the stadium in IPL and Team India matches. By purchasing their team in the ETPL they have not only invested in European cricket but also created new opportunities for youth and international cricket fans.
