Life imprisonment to the killer of Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, who was shot during election campaign 3 years ago
Shinzo Abe’s assassin sentenced to life imprisonment : Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was shot dead about three years ago, this incident happened when Abe was campaigning. Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, convicted in this case, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. A Japanese court has given its verdict in this case on Wednesday. Yamagami had confessed to his crime. However, the assassination of the Japanese PM shook the entire world.

When and why was the Japanese PM assassinated?
Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was shot in Nara, Japan on July 8, 2022, while he was giving an election speech. Abe was shot by Tetsuya Yamagami with a homemade gun, dying in hospital a few hours later. The trial of this case started in October. During this time the murderer Yamagami had confessed to his crime. In this case, the defense had appealed to limit the punishment to 20 years, which was rejected by the court. Now Nara District Court found Yamagami guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Abe’s assassination exposed longstanding ties between Japan’s ruling party and a controversial South Korean church. Accused Yamagami told the court that he shot Shinzo Abe because of a video message. His aim was to harm the Church and expose the Church’s political relations with it. He wanted to kill the church leader first, but it was difficult to get close to him so he targeted Abe. Abe was the biggest symbol of that relationship. After this incident many questions were raised on the close relationship between the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the Church.
After the assassination of PM Abe and the revelations about his killer Yamagami, the Liberal Democratic Party has distanced itself from the church. After investigating the matter, the court also took away the tax exempt status of the Japanese branch of the church and ordered its dissolution.
