Daryl Mitchell becomes number-1 by defeating Virat Kohli in ICC ODI rankings

Daryl Mitchell overtakes Virat Kohli to become number one in the ICC ODI rankings.

He got this position after his excellent performance in the India-New Zealand ODI series, especially two century innings.

ICC ODI Rankings: India’s star batsman Virat Kohli has suffered a big setback in ICC’s latest ODI batsman rankings. The number-1 position has now gone to New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell achieved this feat on the basis of his excellent performance in recent matches, while Kohli’s ranking has declined. Keep in mind that only last week, Kohli had overtaken Rohit Sharma to become the number-1 ODI batsman. This was the first time since July 2021 that he returned to the number-1 position. But due to the excellent performance of Daryl Mitchell in the recent ODI series, Kohli slipped down this time.

Daryl Mitchell has 845 ranking points, while Virat Kohli has slipped to second place with 795 points. Behind them are big batsmen like Ibrahim Zadran, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Babar Azam. This is the second time that Mitchell has become number-1 in the ODI rankings. Earlier, he had been at the top position for just three days in November last year, after which Rohit Sharma snatched this place from him.

Hamilton-born Daryl Mitchell is currently in the best form of his career. He scored a total of 352 runs in the three-match ODI series. In the second match, he was selected as ‘Player of the Match’, in which he scored an unbeaten inning of 131 runs on 117 balls. With the help of this innings, New Zealand achieved parity in the first match and later won the entire series 2-1.

New Zealand had to face defeat in the first match of the series, but in that match too Mitchell scored the most runs for the team by scoring 84 runs on 71 balls. Making a total of 352 runs in a three-match ODI series is the highest score by any New Zealand player so far. This performance is also the third highest score at the world level. Only Pakistan’s Babar Azam (360 runs against West Indies in 2016) and India’s Shubhman Gill (360 runs against New Zealand in 2023) are ahead of him.

Mitchell has had two consecutive innings of 130+ runs. With this achievement, he has equaled the record of great New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill, who also has four innings of 130+ runs in ODIs. Mitchell is now at fourth place in terms of scoring ODI centuries against India. Ahead of him is only South Africa’s AB de Villiers, who has scored five centuries in India.

Mitchell has played 54 ODI innings so far, and during this period he has not been out on a duck (duck) even once. This is the second longest such streak in ODI history. Only keeper Alan Wessels is ahead of him, who holds the record of never being out for a duck in 105 ODI innings between 1983 and 1994.

At the same time, Virat Kohli also performed brilliantly in the ODI series and stood second after Daryl Mitchell in terms of scoring runs. Kohli scored a total of 240 runs in the three-match series, in which his highest score was 124 runs. He batted at an average of 80.00 and a strike rate of 105.26.
