Sony TCL Joint Venture: Big twist in Sony TV business; Sony-TCL historic deal
- A major upheaval in consumer electronics
- Sold 51% joint venture with TCL
- TCL’s dominance in the TV market will increase?
Sony TCL Joint Venture: There has been a big upheaval in the world of electronics. Sony Group Corporation has announced its TV business partner. The company is reportedly selling 51% of its home entertainment arm to Chinese electronics giant TCL Electronics Holdings Ltd. Following this landmark agreement, the two companies will embark on a joint project, which is expected to commence in April 2027.
For the Japanese companies, the move marks a shift away from the less profitable television hardware segment. Sony is now shifting its focus from traditional electronics to higher-growth and more profitable areas such as PlayStation. Future TVs will retain the ‘Sony’ and ‘Bravia’ branding, but their main display technology is now likely to be provided by TCL.

This arrangement will help Sony Company to maintain its strong brand presence in the global market and mitigate the challenges of high costs and low profitability associated with TV production. According to Kimio Maki, president and CEO of Sony, the purpose of the partnership is to combine the expertise of both companies to provide consumers with an even better viewing experience.
Chinese company TCL has rapidly expanded its global reach in recent years. At the recent CES 2026 show in Las Vegas, TCL grabbed the world’s attention by beating major companies like Samsung and capturing the most prominent display space. Now, this deal with Sony will directly benefit TCL from Sony’s global recognition and engineering heritage, further strengthening its position in the premium TV segment.

As per the key terms of this strategic agreement, TCL will lead the joint venture as it holds a majority stake of 51%. According to Du Juan, Chairman of TCL, this decision will first serve as a solid foundation for sustainable growth. The deal will help Sony move from a hardware-based to a software- and services-based business model.
The most important thing for consumers is that the brand name will not change. Sony TV enthusiasts will still be able to buy TVs with the ‘Bravia’ name, but their panel and display technology will be based entirely on TCL engineering. This partnership is an attempt to maintain Sony’s presence in the global living room while balancing affordability and cutting-edge technology in the market.
