‘One of the best finishers’: Simon Doull says India haven’t used Rinku enough
Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull believes India has not given Rinku Singh enough opportunities in T20 internationals, despite the batter repeatedly proving his match-winning credentials.
Rinku once again underlined his finishing prowess in the first T20I against New Zealand on Wednesday, January 21, smashing an unbeaten 44 off just 20 deliveries. His innings, studded with four fours and three sixes, powered India to a daunting 238 for seven and laid the foundation for a 48-run victory in Nagpur.
Since making his T20I debut in 2023, Rinku has featured in only 36 matches, a number Doull feels is far too low for a player of his calibre. Although Rinku missed out on India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, he has since earned selection for the 2026 edition.
Doull argued that Rinku should have been a regular fixture in India’s T20I setup by now, given his composure under pressure and exceptional power at the death.
“Rinku Singh is one of the best finishers in the game,” Doull said on Star Sports. “We saw him burst onto the scene in the IPL four or five years ago, and I still feel he hasn’t played enough T20 cricket for India. He could easily have played close to 100 games by now.”
The former pacer stressed the importance of backing Rinku in a clearly defined finishing role.
“He needs to be trusted in that role because he is exceptional at it. Despite not being the tallest, he generates tremendous power, and his ability to get under the ball at the death makes him incredibly difficult to bowl to,” Doull added.
