It’s a long Republic Day weekend, and cinephiles are in for a visual treat with a movie marathon, whether on OTT platforms or in theatres. The Dhurandhar fever is far from over, with many theatres still screening the film. This Friday, on the eve of Republic Day, Sunny Deol-starrer Border 2 will hit the screens. The movie is the second installment in the war drama franchise that began with J.P. Dutta’s 1997 directorial Border. The upcoming film focuses on India’s war against Pakistan in 1971.

The stakes are high as Border 2 features Gen Z actors and also caters to the new Gen Alpha audience who haven’t seen the original cult classic. However, it seems Border 2 may face the same fate as Dhurandhar, as Sunny Deol’s film, one of the biggest releases of 2026, will not be released in Gulf countries.

According to reports, just like Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, Border 2 won’t be released in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE. Bollywood Hungama noted, “By now, it’s clear that films perceived as having ‘anti-Pakistan’ content don’t get a release in this region. The team of Border 2 did make an attempt, but unfortunately, their efforts proved futile. With only a day left for the release, hope remains, but the possibility seems remote.”

The report added, “Recently, even Dhurandhar was denied release in the same region. However, the makers of Border 2 are not losing sleep over it, as they know that if the film connects with audiences, the sky’s the limit in terms of box office collections. Even Dhurandhar excelled at the ticket window, and the loss from the UAE/GCC market didn’t matter. Hopefully, Border 2 will follow the same trajectory.”

Meanwhile, Border 2 is the first major film of 2026 to release with minimal cuts. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not asked for any changes in the dialogues or action scenes, leaving the film intact as envisioned by the filmmaker.

However, minor changes were suggested; the actual name of Sunny Deol’s character, Fateh Singh, was to be added in the credits, visuals of the Indian flag on the warplane were adjusted as per guidelines, the warship’s name was replaced with Kavach, and the duration and font size of information about the warriors were increased.

According to NDTV, Border 2 has been granted a U/A 13+ rating by the CBFC. With a runtime of 3 hours 16 minutes, it is one of Bollywood’s longest war films. The makers also ensured that the emblem on Sunny Deol’s shoulder was accurate, confirming it with the army and the family of Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (played by Varun Dhawan).

About Dhurandar

Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar was a massive global success, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025. Directed by Aditya Dhar the film is going strong at the box office.

Despite its success in India and other countries, Dhurandhar faced a ban in several Middle Eastern nations, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. This ban resulted in an estimated Rs 90 crore ($10 million) loss in overseas earnings. Pranab Kapadia, Dhurandhar’s overseas distributor, revealed that the Gulf market is especially crucial for Indian action films, which traditionally perform well there.
