Rare surgery performed on 51-year-old woman; uterus removed in shocking…

Pune : Doctors at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (ABMH), Pune, successfully removed a rare uterine tumor weighing 18 kg from the abdomen of a 51-year-old woman from Pune, giving her a new lease of life. The complex and high-risk surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr. Nikhil Parvate, a gynecologist, oncologist and robotic surgeon at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital. It is one of the largest such surgeries recorded in recent times.

This female patient had been suffering from severe abnormal menstrual bleeding for the past two months. Due to this, she had to change about 12 sanitary pads every day during her menstrual period. Along with this, she was also experiencing symptoms like bloating, dizziness, increased heart rate and extreme fatigue. When she was admitted to the hospital for medical treatment, her hemoglobin had dropped to a very low level of only 5 grams per deciliter. Due to this, she looked very pale and weak.

Considering her delicate condition and pre-existing heart problems, she was shifted from a local hospital to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital. Dr. Rajesh Badani, Associate Director, Department of Interventional Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, ABMH, coordinated the process and personally travelled with the patient and monitored her closely throughout the treatment.

A highly coordinated multidisciplinary team of experts from Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital handled the case. The surgery was led by Dr. Nikhil Parvate, while Dr. Pankaj Kshirsagar participated as a co-surgeon. Dr. Tanaji Mhetre was responsible as an anesthesiologist. Ureteric stenting (temporary placement of a thin stent in the ureter leading from the kidney to the bladder) was performed before the surgery to protect important urinary tract structures. Since the patient was at high risk for cardiac complications, Dr. Badani was present throughout the surgery to provide continuous cardiac monitoring and necessary support. The pathology team performed extensive tests to rule out the possibility of cancer. The team was led by Dr. Shruti Rao and Dr. Kiran Gore.

Despite the enormous size of the tumor, surgeons successfully removed the entire 18 kg tumor in one go through open surgery. Notably, the bleeding during the surgery was less than 100 ml and the patient did not require a blood transfusion during or after the surgery.

Commenting on this, Dr. Nikhil Parvate, Gynecologist Cancer and Robotic Surgeon, ABMH said, “This case was extremely challenging due to the very large size of the uterine tumor and the patient’s deteriorating health. Through meticulous preoperative planning, blood management and precise surgery, we were able to safely remove the entire tumor without damaging the surrounding organs. For this, early diagnosis and timely medical intervention are of utmost importance.”

Dr. Rajesh Badani, Interventional Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, ABMH, said, “This patient had a very large increase in the size of her uterus in a short period of time without any obvious symptoms. However, with the help of continuous cardiac monitoring and a coordinated team, we were able to safely manage her during this very high-risk surgery.” The patient was closely monitored after the surgery. She was able to move around within a few days and was discharged from the hospital on the fifth day after the surgery. Interestingly, she did not require any medication even after two weeks of discharge.

Commenting on the successful treatment, Pamesh Gupta, CEO, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, said, “This surgery is a great example of the power of our multidisciplinary model at ABMH. Experts from all departments including Gynaecology, Oncology, Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Urology, Pathology and Critical Care worked together, coordinating with each other at every stage. In such complex and high-risk cases, timely decisions and collective expertise are life-saving. It also highlights the importance of early diagnosis and prompt intervention.”

This surgery is a concrete example of how timely medical intervention, the combined expertise of various specialists, and compassionate treatment can achieve excellent outcomes even in complex and high-risk medical situations.
