Team India, won by crores of fans, will now proudly remain Team India, Court puts a stop to useless claims

Whenever Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli comes on the field wearing a blue jersey, the entire country sees them as ‘Team India’. But a lawyer had objection to this. Advocate Reepak Kansal filed a petition in the Supreme Court and said that BCCI is a private organization, then why is this team called ‘Team India’ or ‘Indian National Team’? His argument was that this misleads the general public and the national symbols are being misused. He even said that BCCI should not call its players the national team. When the Supreme Court showed ‘anger’, the Supreme Court bench said while hearing this petition, it silenced the petitioner. The court said in very clear words – “What is this? Do you want to say that the team which has been playing with the tricolor all over the world for years, is not representing India? Just because you can draft anything sitting at home, you will be wasting the time of the court?” The judges said that the team which has been playing for the country for 60-70 years, does not need anyone’s challenge. The court called it completely “absurd and a waste of the court’s time”. A fine of lakhs was saved! The special thing about this case is that the Delhi High Court had already rejected this petition. Despite this the matter was taken to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court was so strict that it was about to impose a huge fine of Rs 10 lakh on the petitioner, but it was withdrawn after the petitioner apologized and pleaded for mercy. Why is this victory important? The truth is that even though BCCI is technically a registered society, it is the face of India at the global level. The entire country and the Government of India also consider it to be the representative team of the country. This decision of the Supreme Court has now confirmed that it is not right every time to approach the court for ‘publicity’ of social media. So now the fans can rest assured, Team India will make us proud in future also with its same glory and name.
