There’s an active recall on organic chia seeds sold across Canada, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). This is due to Salmonella contamination.

The product being recalled is Left Coast Organics’ Organic Chia Seeds sold in 900-gram bags at retail locations in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan. The recalled bags contain a printed UPC of “6 25691 21034 9” and best-before date “26 NO 13” or “26 NO 14.”

This recall was triggered by a recall in another country, per the CFIA report. While there are no illnesses currently connected to this recall, Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) can be severe for sensitive groups, including immunocompromised and pregnant individuals. If you are showing symptoms of foodborne illness like stomach cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Check your chia seeds ASAP, and if your package matches the recalled information, dispose of them or return to your place of purchase for a potential refund. For questions about this recall, contact the CFIA at 1-613-773-2342 or email [email protected]
