“AR Rahman can convert to Hinduism again, see if he gets work or not”

A.R. has been complaining about getting less work due to communal bias in the Hindi film industry for the last few years. Senior singer Anup Jalota’s reaction has come to light on Rahman’s claim. Jalota has issued a video statement and suggested that A.R. Rahman can convert to Hinduism again, see if he gets work or not.

A.R. Rahman said in an interview with BBC Asian Network that he has received relatively little work in the Hindi film industry in the last eight years. Rehman cited the change in power as the reason behind this and also hinted that communal bias could also be one of the reasons for this, though he clarified that this was not expressed to him directly.

Responding to Rahman’s comment, Anup Jalota said in his video message released in Hindi, “Music director AR Rahman was initially a Hindu and later he converted to Islam. After that he worked a lot, gained fame and got a lot of love. But if he still feels that he is not getting enough work in our country because of religion, then he should think about becoming a Hindu again. He should have the confidence that after becoming a Hindu once again, he will get work.” This is what I understood from his interview, so I strongly advise him to convert to Hinduism again and see if he gets work or not.”

There have been reactions of both support and opposition to this statement on social media.

In an interview given to BBC, A.R. Rahman had said, “Maybe in the last eight years, because the regime has changed, and now people who are not creative have power. It could also be a communal thing, but it is not in front of me. I got to know in a whisper that they had booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired five of their composers. I said, ‘Oh, this is great. It is relaxing for me. I can chill with my family. ‘am.'”

In the same interview, Rehman described the film Chhaava as a divisive film and said, “It is a divisive film. I think it took advantage of the division, but its purpose is to show bravery. I had asked the director, ‘Why did he need me for this film?’ But he said he only needed me. It’s a funny movie, but people are smarter than that. Do you think people will be influenced by the films? They have a conscience that knows what is truth and what is manipulation.

Reactions of other artists have also come to light on this entire controversy. Actress Kangana Ranaut disagreed, criticizing Rehman’s comments, while singer Shaan said that more or less work in an artist’s career is not necessarily linked to religion.
