T20 World Cup 2026 Boycott By India Would Cost Bangladesh Cricket 325 Crore Rupees

The future of Bangladesh cricket seems to be in serious trouble if it is out of the T20 World Cup 2026. The decision of the interim government to stick to its anti-India stance and refuse to play in India is going to have a direct impact on the financial health of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). According to reports, due to this decision, BCB’s total income may decline by 50 to 60 percent and it may have to suffer a loss of hundreds of crores of rupees in Indian currency.

In the backdrop of the case, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had rejected Bangladesh’s demand to shift its T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India to Sri Lanka. The ICC then gave Bangladesh one final opportunity to agree to play in India. However, the Bangladesh government and the BCB chose to stick to their decision citing security concerns. The government says that there is a threat to the safety of players, journalists and fans in India.

According to sources, the players tried to convince the board and the government during a meeting, but the effort failed. The meeting ended with the decision that Bangladesh will not participate in the T20 World Cup. The direct result of this was that the country’s team had to be out of the tournament.

According to the report, BCB will lose around 325 crore Bangladeshi Taka in annual revenue from ICC, which is equivalent to approximately US$27 million or around Rs 247.4 crore. This amount comes from the ICC’s revenue share. Additionally, there will be a separate loss of income from broadcasting rights and sponsorship. Overall, BCB’s income could decline by 60 percent or more in the 2025-26 financial year.

The report also said that the government and BCB have assured the players that they will be paid their match fees despite not taking part in the T20 World Cup. However, the dream of representing the country on the top level global platform remains unfulfilled for the players.

Speaking to the media, a BCB official said that the board is helpless in the face of the government’s tough stance. He said, “Today when the players met government advisor Asif Nazrul, he did most of the talking, with Bulbul Bhai’s comments coming in between. The players remained silent most of the time. Senior players feel that when a player of Tamim Iqbal’s stature can be treated like this, they may have to face even bigger opposition.”

Experts believe that the long-term impact of this huge financial loss could be devastating for Bangladesh cricket. Many domestic and grassroots level cricket activities may come to a standstill, which will have a direct impact on the development of young talent. If the situation does not improve soon, there is a possibility of a deep blow to both the structure and future of cricket in Bangladesh.
