The number of vehicles in India is increasing day by day. This is also increasing the number of accidents. However, there are some unruly motorists who flout the traffic rules and ride without helmets. Uninterrupted signals are broken. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has changed the traffic rules for such people only.

To strengthen road safety, the central government has made significant amendments to the motor vehicle rules. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways clarified that five or more traffic violations in a year will result in suspension of driving license for three months. The provision, which will come into effect from January 1, 2026, is aimed at raising awareness about common mistakes like not wearing helmets, ignoring seat belts or crossing red signals and to take action against violations.

In order to strengthen road safety, the central government has made significant changes in the motor vehicle rules. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has clarified that five or more violations of traffic rules in a year can result in suspension of the driver’s license for three months. This new rule will be applicable from January 1, 2026.

The purpose of this rule is to create awareness among motorists to avoid common but dangerous mistakes like not wearing helmet, not wearing seat belt, breaking red signal and to take strict action against repeat violators.

Earlier there was only fine, but now action is also taken against license

Until now, only fines (challan) were levied for such minor traffic violations. However, now if the rules are repeatedly broken, the driving license can also be suspended. Previously, license suspension was limited to serious offenses such as overspeeding, vehicle theft or passenger harassment. But now, if even small rules are broken again and again, they are going to be considered as serious violations.

Importantly, the calculations of the previous year’s currency will not be added to the new year. Every calendar year will be recalculated from January 1, giving motorists a chance to correct their mistake.

The driver will get an opportunity to present his side

Before suspending the license, the driver concerned will be given full opportunity to present his case. The ministry has clarified that no action will be taken without hearing.

Strict rules regarding toll collection also

Under this amendment, toll collection has also been controlled. If the toll of a vehicle is in arrears, the vehicle cannot be sold, nor can it be transferred to other states. Apart from this, the fitness certificate of that vehicle will also not be renewed.

According to experts, these changes are an important step towards implementation of barrier-free toll system (free-flow tolling). The system will be completely based on digital tracking, which will stop loss of revenue and streamline transportation.
