IND vs NZ: Ishan Kishan’s powerplay blast, made a big record with a brilliant comeback
Delhi: In the second T20I played between India and New Zealand, Ishan Kishan played such an inning which completely changed the picture of the match. After a difficult start, they put tremendous pressure on New Zealand’s bowlers in the powerplay itself.
Ishaan played record innings
Ishaan scored 56 runs in just 23 balls. This is the second highest individual score for India in T20I powerplay. Ahead of him is only Abhishek Sharma, who scored 58 runs in 21 balls against England at Wankhede in 2025.
With this innings, Ishaan made another special record in his name. He became the second non-opening batsman to score more than 50 runs in the powerplay against full member teams. Only Dion Myers and Josh Inglis are ahead of him in this list.
50+ scores by non-openers in powerplay:
| run (batsman) | balls | batsman | Team | venue | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | 27 | Dion Myers | rwanda | nairobi | 2024 |
| 56 | 23 | Ishaan Kishan | India | Raipur | 2026 |
| 51 | 29 | josh inglis | west indies | basseter | 2025 |
The effect of Ishaan’s aggressive batting was clearly visible on the team’s score. India scored 75 runs in the powerplay and lost only 2 wickets. This is India’s second highest powerplay score against New Zealand. Earlier in the 2007 World T20, India had scored 76 runs in the powerplay against New Zealand.
This innings of Ishan Kishan laid the foundation of India’s historic run chase. His pace and confident batting pushed New Zealand on the back foot and showed India the path to an easy victory.
