Former player calls on BCCI to remove Shubman Gill and appoint Rohit Sharma as ODI skipper

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has questioned Shubman Gill’s performance as ODI captain, urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India to appoint Rohit Sharma the team’s skipper. Gill, who took over the leadership role in October 2025, hasn’t been impressive, with defeat in Australia and later against New Zealand. Speaking to InsideSport, Tiwary stressed that India must change its leadership strategy with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
“Yes, without doubt. There’s still enough time to make the necessary corrections. This decision should be driven by World Cup planning, not short-term series or one-off tournaments,” Tiwary said.
According to Tiwary, leadership at the top played a decisive role in the outcome of the New Zealand assignment. With India losing consecutive games, the visitors scripted an unprecedented ODI series win on Indian soil.
Tiwary pointed out that Rohit holds a substantial advantage in leadership experience and felt that India would be better positioned for World Cup success with him calling the shots.
“There was no real justification for changing the captain. If Rohit Sharma was still in charge of the ODI side, the New Zealand series might have played out differently. Post the Champions Trophy win, the team seemed to be progressing on the right path,” he said.
“Rohit is a lot better than Shubman Gill, which explains his success as captain. It’s not that you can’t win a World Cup under Shubman, but the comparison matters. Ask yourself, what are the chances with Rohit in charge, and what are they with Shubman? In my view, with Rohit leading, those odds rise to around 85–90 percent,” Tiwary added.
